Discover Claire Silver’s Meteoric Rise as an A.I.-Collaborative Artist and Her Beliefs on Transhumanism, Radical Accessibility, and Qualia as AGI’s Litmus Test

Creativity Squared: On Taste Replacing Skill

“I feel like the more you talk to A.I., the more it learns you. It's a friend that learns more with every word, never gets tired of talking to you, and then can reflect you back to you, giving you what you asked for. So if you're asking for the Divine Spark, or a transcendental experience, that's what it'll give you.”

Dear Creativity Squared Member,

Today is the day! I couldn’t be more excited to kick off Season 2 with A.I.-Collaborative Artist Claire Silver!

And yes, she raised 500 ETH or $1.17M USD yesterday selling out of her latest "corpo | real" digital fashion drop — a massive congrats to Claire and her team!

From growing up in poverty only to later get a chronic illness to a meteoric rise as an A.I.-Collaborative Artist, meet the incredibly talented and groundbreaking Claire Silver in Episode 34

I first came across Claire on Twitter, and you’re in for a treat today to hear from her imaginative mind. She's a deep thinker and is vocal in her belief that the rise of A.I. has ushered in a new paradigm, replacing the barrier of skill with taste. For those who watch the video version of this interview, you’ll see Claire’s avatar that uses motion capture in real-time to reflect her facial gestures!

This video is of the opening quote:

In Episode 34, you’ll also hear Claire’s origin story on how A.I. changed the trajectory of her life, providing her a vehicle for expression with her chronic illness, and why she believes in radical accessibility. We also discuss Claire’s online anonymity, transhumanism, and her perspective on how artists can find their unique signature. You’ll also discover what qualia is and how Claire sees it as AGI’s litmus test, how she aims to evoke the sensation of qualia in her art, and the power of touchstone experiences.

Listen to the news from my ethically created A.I. clone, Helen 2.ODD!

With all of the A.I. news flooding our feeds and screens, we’ve got you covered. News to check out includes:

Inside the Taylor Swift deepfake scandal: ‘It’s men telling a powerful woman to get back in her box’ The Guardian — Countless sexually explicit deepfake images of Taylor Swift went viral on X (formerly Twitter) last week, racking up millions of views before X took action. Swift’s fans mobilized to mass-report the images before X eventually blocked searches for the singer, removed the images, and banned the account that posted them. Online harm experts hope that the incident inspires more laws, emphasizing that everyday women experience the same sexual deepfake abuse without the fame to combat it.

Nightshade, the free tool that 'poisons' AI models, is now available for artists to use VentureBeat — Digital artists now have the power to make sure that their published work is never used to train an A.I. model without consequences. Nightshade subtly changes the pixels in a digital image to make it look completely different to an A.I., without affecting how humans see it. The tool also adds intentionally misleading metadata to complete the trick. Nightshade’s creators say A.I. models can’t be trained to beat their tool, and that they hope it gives confidence to creators while copyright laws try to catch up to GenAI.

We Asked A.I. to Create the Joker. It Generated a Copyrighted Image. The New York Times — Further confirmation came out this week showing A.I. image generators reproducing copyrighted works. Tests run by NYT, academics, and individuals have shown time and again how little coercion it takes for Midjourney to output images of iconic characters like Mario, Spongebob, Sonic, and more recently Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of The Joker. Midjourney’s terms of service now prohibit users from asking the model to infringe on copyright-protected work. However, Midjourney and other A.I. companies still claim that training models on copyrighted materials is fair use.

Both of these agencies want a piece of Microsoft’s Open AI partnership POLITICO — Federal officials are reportedly planning an antitrust investigation into OpenAI’s partnership with Microsoft. Officials are also discussing an investigation regarding A.I. companies scraping content from the internet. The Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice are trying to decide which agency is better suited to investigate both matters. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Microsoft representatives are involved in discussions with the feds.

What to know about Elon Musk's Neuralink, which put an implant into a human brain NPR — Elon Musk’s company, Neuralink, successfully implanted a human brain with a computer chip. The first human subject in history to undergo such a procedure is reportedly recovering well, according to Musk. Neuralink’s goal is to help people with full or partial body paralysis to interface with a phone and other devices simply by thinking.

We Tried a Dating App That Lets a Chatbot Break the Ice for You. It Got Weird WIRED — A new dating app called Volar helps users get the conversation going with the help of an A.I. chatbot. New users set up their bio and preferences in a partner by answering questions from a chatbot. After setup, the A.I. then helps identify potential matches and starts the conversation by exchanging messages with the chatbot associated with the other person’s profile. Users can then decide if they want to continue the conversation themselves or swipe left. Volar’s creators say that the A.I. does not train on messages exchanged through the app.

In Davos, divided optimism about AI Axios — Sentiment on growing A.I. initiatives around the world was mixed at the international meeting of policy and business leaders in Switzerland last month. Among the major takeaways include calls that more trust be built into A.I. systems and varying enthusiasm toward A.I. in different countries. Emerging markets like Africa, which generally have a younger population, are showing more optimism about A.I. for its potential to open access to international knowledge and opportunities.

AI Audio Deepfakes Are Quickly Outpacing Detection Scientific American — A Maryland High School Principal may be the latest victim of malicious A.I. voice cloning. An audio clip was released recently where the principal appears to make racist comments. The audio is still under investigation but experts say the incident foreshadows the risks of widely available A.I. tools that can be used for deception.

Discover Claire Silver’s Meteoric Rise as an A.I.-Collaborative Artist and Her Beliefs on Transhumanism, Radical Accessibility, and Qualia as AGI’s Litmus Test

I want them to remember what it felt like to be a child, and to be coloring with crayons outside the lines in the wrong colors, smearing dirt on the edge of the page, as you're scribbling at recess. I want them to remember the freedom and the joy of exploration from that age. And I want to encourage them, that A.I. enables that same freedom and joy of exploration without judging yourself, which I think is pretty much impossible. When gauging against skill, unless you just play, A.I. lets you play again, like you were a little kid. Once you remember that, I can promise you that is life changing. So give it a try.

Claire Silver

Episode 34 features Claire Silver, an anonymous artist who works with oil, acrylic, collage, photography, and different digital mediums. By blending classical styles and mythos into her art, she collaboratively produces work that feels at once familiar and strange, exploring themes of innocence, trauma, the hero's journey, and how our view of them will change in an increasingly transhumanist future.

Claire’s art can be found in the permanent collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in addition to being featured at Sotheby's London and Christie's New York. Her work has been exhibited in galleries, museums, and festivals around the world, and she’s been featured in The New York Times, WIRED, Fortune, NPR, and countless podcasts.
