Creativity Squared: On A.I. & Art in 2023 & 2024
“Today we are beginning to notice that the new media are not just mechanical gimmicks for creating worlds of illusion, but new languages with new and unique powers of expression.”
Dear Creativity Squared Member,
Hope this finds you enjoying the holidays and unplugging from work this special week where our inboxes are among the quietest in the year.
Last week was our last podcast episode of 2023 with a special interview on the Terminator 2 parody made using only A.I. — “OUR T2 REMAKE” — that flips the script on artificial intelligence. Instead of destroying the world, the feature film showcases how A.I. can empower artists, open a new genre of filmmaking, and reimagine what’s possible with human creativity powered by A.I. tools.
Today is the last Creativity Squared newsletter of 2023, and it’s filled with lists!

I jumped into the deep end with all things A.I. this year by launching this podcast and newsletter, and from the bottom of my heart, I am so grateful for you joining along on the journey!
I’ve learned so much from each of my guests and the incredible people in the space who have embraced A.I. to those who are asking the hard, critical questions about it.
The mission of Creativity Squared is to envision a world where artists not only coexist with A.I., but thrive. We’ve had guests on the show whose career trajectories have skyrocketed with A.I. and some who are worried about its impact on their art form. As Sara Horowitz pointed out, WE get to decide how we want this tech to be. And my hope is that we never lose sight of why we’re building it: to amplify the best of human potential.
Buckle up! We’re just getting started with Creativity Squared, and 2024 is going to be an even wilder year, with A.I. impacting even more facets of our lives.
There are so many people to thank for making Creativity Squared possible and for all of the encouragement, support, and belief in this project. I want to send a special shout-out to all of my guests this year who agreed to be on a brand-new podcast to share their time and insights with us.
And most importantly: Thank you again for subscribing, listening, sharing, and providing inspiration for this project.
Happy New Year — here's to exponential possibilities!

🔮 Top 14 2024 A.I. Predictions
Apple Vision Pro Revives Metaverse Interest — Apple Vision Pro will revive interest in the metaverse and extended reality experiences.
More People Will Digitally Clone Themselves — As natural extensions of our online identities, cartoony avatars are becoming more hyper-realistic and we’ll see more people clone themselves and put their clones to work for them.
Wider Content Credential Adoption — With over 40 national elections worldwide, including the US, the need and urgency for content credential adoption will be critical to combat A.I.-created misinformation and deepfakes.
First A.I. Viewer-Customized Video Experiences — As A.I. video continues to skyrocket in capabilities, we’ll see our first customized videos for viewers, turning entertainment into choose your own adventures, blurring the lines of gaming and video-watching.
Search Evolves with A.I. — Chatbots will continue to eat search forcing search to evolve and adopt natural language and multimodal experience and find ways to add value to compete with or merge with chatbot functionality.
A.I.’s Citizen Kane Moment for Art — We’ll see the Citizen Kane of A.I. Art that makes us fundamentally expand our perspective of what’s possible with artificial intelligence as its own medium (vs. just using A.I. for our current art forms).
Grok Dumpster Fire — There will be a dumpster fire moment for Grok at the scale of Twitter/X’s dumpster fire year of 2023 with Elon Musk at the helm and few guardrails for Grok…
Onset of Personal LLMs — With Google integrating A.I. into all their products, we’ll start using our own personal LLMs as personal assistants leveraging our own data, furthering A.I. as productivity co-pilot tools.
IP Becomes More Important than Ever — With data becoming the new oil, your own data and IP will become more important than ever to distinguish brands and artists in the era of GenAI.
Decision-Making is the New Metric — With A.I. adding a layer to all aspects of business and art, decision-making will supplant productivity as the KPI of 2024.
Ethical A.I. is King — The companies that weave ethical and responsible A.I. into every facet of their companies will win in the long run. Look at Adobe leading the way with ethical A.I. and Zoom’s botched A.I. launch that didn’t put ethics at the forefront of the rollout.
Explosion of Creativity from New Voices — With A.I. democratizing creativity and lowering the barrier to create, we’ll see new creativity from voices from all around the world (and we personally can’t wait for the new stories and art that emerges!).
The Embrace of Human Imperfections — As A.I. and the aesthetic of A.I. continue to reflect back human perfection (not too different than social media’s curated feeds), we’ll see the pendulum swing to embracing what makes us most human: our imperfections.
Creativity Squared will Become the #1 A.I. Podcast 😁

🤞 Top 10 2024 Creativity Squared Dream Guests
Dolly Parton — Dolly already has a hologram of herself at her theme park, Dollywood, located in the town where I grew up, and she has already started planning for her music to be used post-mortem before GenAI. I’d love to ask her how she’s thinking about her legacy now that A.I. opens up new possibilities. (Article on it)
Snoop Dogg — Snoop was one of the first celebrities to be digitally cloned with a hyper-realistic digital likeness in addition to being a Meta AI. Would love to talk to him about being cloned and his other tech-forward endeavors. (Article on his Synthesia clone)
Refik Anadol — Refik absolutely blew up this year with his mesmerizing A.I. art that has been seen around the world, including a permamant piece in the MoMA in NYC to the Sphere in Las Vegas. He’s inspired by the idea of machines dreaming and uses A.I. as a paintbrush. That captured my imagination, and I’d love to dive deeper into this subject with him. (His website)
Holly Herndon — Holly grew up in East Tennessee not too far from me, and was named one of “The 100 Most Influential People in A.I. 2023” on Time’s list. She’s an A.I. OG when it comes to voice cloning with her digital twin, Holly+. She’s also a Dolly fan, so I’d love to geek out with her about all of her A.I. initiatives, including her site to help artists know if their art was used to trained A.I. models. (Her website)
Tristan Harris — I was lucky to meet Tristan at Summit at Sea this year. He’s the face of ethical A.I., and I’d love to get him on the show to talk about the progress since “The A.I. Delimma” came out, what still needs to be done, and the role of art in shaping public perception. (Center for Humane Technology website)
Android Jones — Android Jones is an incredible artist when it comes to digital art, projection, and immersive experiences. He also had a seminal talk with Sam Altman on A.I. called “The Future of Art” at Burning Man 2022 that I’d love to discuss with him. (His website)
Karen X. Cheng — Karen is a wildly talented creator who is at the cutting edge of testing all A.I. tools. She inspires me and I’d love to talk all things A.I. and creativity with her. (Her website)
Trevor Noah — Having this podcast as an excuse to geek out about Hell’s Kitchen (our old neighborhood), A.I., and all things tech and culture with Trevor is a dream! He’s had amazing guests in A.I. on his new podcast on top of consulting for Microsoft. (His website)
Grimes — Grimes, similar to Holly Herndon, is embracing A.I. by sharing her cloned voice AND revenues with her fans who create music with it through her AI voice software, Elf.Tech. Would love to do a deep dive into the project, where it’s at, and what she sees is coming next in her art and in the A.I. space. (Her Instagram)
Casey Newton & Kevin Roose — I was very lucky to meet both of these amazing tech journalists at SXSW and fan-girled out as an avid reader of their writing and listener of their podcast Hard Fork. Kevin’s article on Sydney is part of the 2023 A.I. canon, and I’d love the excuse to talk with both of them about their reporting coverage of artificial intelligence. (Kevin’s website and Casey’s website)
