Reimagine our Future with Data 4 Public Good Speakers Part 3

Creativity Squared: On A.I. and Data Justice

It's not just about de-biasing the algorithm, or making the data that goes in less racist, so that the data comes out less racist, but really thinking about, why does it function the way that it does? And do we want that function to exist at all?"

Your A.I. + Creativity News Roundup

With all of the A.I. news flooding our feeds and screens, we’ve got you covered. News to check out includes:

OpenAI’s Project Strawberry will become ChatGPT5, launch soon, and be better at math than any chatbot, insiders say TechRadar — OpenAI’s upcoming Project Strawberry, expected to release this Fall, is expected to crunch numbers much better than its GPT predecessors. It will feature advanced problem-solving skills, demonstrated by solving complex puzzles. Project Strawberry might be integrated into ChatGPT 5 or used to improve training data quality.

California State Assembly passes sweeping AI safety bill The Verge The California State Assembly passed the Safe and Secure Innovation for Frontier Artificial Intelligence Models Act (SB 1047). The bill mandates A.I. companies in California to implement safety measures, such as the ability to quickly shut down models, protect against unsafe modifications, and maintain testing procedures to evaluate risks. The bill also aims to ensure A.I. safety without stifling innovation. Despite amendments to address concerns from critics like OpenAI and Anthropic, the bill faces opposition for potentially harming small A.I. developers. The bill now awaits a vote in the State Senate and Governor Gavin Newsom’s decision by the end of September.

Google's Gemini AI Gets ‘Gems’ and Built-In Image Maker Decrypt — Google launched a major update to Gemini, introducing customizable “Gems” and integrating the Imagen 3 image generator. Gems allow users to create modular A.I. assistants for various tasks, such as coding and career advice. Assistants can remember detailed instructions and share outputs via links, Google Docs, and Gmail. Imagen 3 enhances Gemini’s capabilities with improved image generation. The company also relaunched the ability to generate humans after users complained about inaccurate representation in generated images.

OpenAI Eyes $100 Billion Valuation New York Times — OpenAI is in discussions to finalize a deal valuing the company at over $100 billion, a significant increase from its valuation eight months ago. Thrive Capital is expected to lead the round with a $1 billion investment, potentially including contributions from Microsoft. This follows a year of rapid growth and challenges for OpenAI, including the temporary firing and reinstatement of CEO Sam Altman. Despite a cooling investor enthusiasm for A.I. start-ups, OpenAI remains a leader in the field, continuing to develop advanced technologies like ChatGPT. The new investment would allow existing shareholders to sell their shares, further solidifying OpenAI’s financial position.

Scientists Access "Settings" of the Universe Futurism —  Researchers have used an A.I. model to calculate the cosmological parameters of the universe by analyzing a survey of around 110,000 galaxies, achieving a precision that would traditionally require four times as many galaxies. These parameters, which include how matter and dark matter organize on a cosmic scale, are crucial for understanding the universe's structure. The A.I. was trained on 2,000 simulated universes, allowing it to recognize subtle effects in galaxy distribution. This method could help resolve the Hubble constant tension, a discrepancy in the universe's expansion rate, potentially revealing new physics about dark energy and the universe's expansion.

AI company Midjourney teases hardware product in a new form factor Ars Technica — Midjourney is recruiting hardware developers ahead of a push into building devices. David Holz, Midjourney’s founder, has hired Ahmad Abbas, a former Apple hardware manager, to lead this division. While we don’t know what kind of device Midjourney plans to build, the company has hinted at various form factors and dismissed the idea of a pendant-like device. Holz previously teased the idea of creating a fantasy-inspired orb-shaped device. However, the company has been playful with its hints, and no concrete details or timelines have been provided.

Secret Claude AI System Prompts Revealed–What Can We Learn From Them? Decrypt — Anthropic released the system prompts for its latest Claude A.I. models, including Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Claude 3 Opus, and Claude 3 Haiku. This move, which is rare among major A.I. firms, provides transparency into how these models are designed to behave. The prompts include guidelines on handling controversial topics and prohibitions on certain functionalities like facial recognition. Anthropic’s approach contrasts with other A.I. companies that keep their prompts confidential. The release aims to help users understand how to interact more effectively with A.I. models by providing detailed context and clear instructions.
