šŸ–¤šŸ¤Ž Ep19. ArtsWave ā€œTruth & Healingā€ Part 3

Discover what "Truth & Healing" means to these ArtsWave Black and Brown Artists Program grant recipients

Creativity Squared: On Truth & Healing
ā

ā€œI am healing because I want to breathe unapologetically. I am healing because I need to embrace love again. I am healing because I deserve to be loved.ā€

- Desirae ā€œThe Silent Poetā€ Hosley, ArtsWave ā€œTruth & Healingā€ Artist

Dear Creativity Squared Member,

The final installment is here, and I couldnā€™t be happier to share Part 3 of the ArtsWave ā€œTruth & Healingā€ series with you today!

Creativity Squared is proud to support and partner with ArtsWave and to bring you this special three-part series featuring the phenomenal artists and grant recipients selected for this yearā€™s ArtsWave Black and Brown Artists Program.

Each part includes a podcast episode with vignettes and then accompanying full-length video interviews, which are also available in this YouTube playlist.

The intention of these interviews is to give these talented and deserving artists another platform to share their art and truth expressed through it, as you never know what ripples will turn into waves. If youā€™re interested in working with, featuring, or supporting these artists, please donā€™t be shy about it.

Creativity Squared is a proud partner of ArtsWave and because itā€™s important to support artists like those featured in todayā€™s episode, 10% of all revenue Creativity Squared generates goes to ArtsWave and directly supports the Black and Brown Artists Program.

This yearā€™s theme is ā€œTruth & Healingā€ and I had the great honor of interviewing the artists to learn more about their work and what truth and healing means to them. Iā€™m inspired, humbled, and grateful to share their stories with you.

Tomorrow Iā€™ll be at Ars Electronica which is the largest art, technology, and society festival in Europe. If you havenā€™t already, check out Episode 11 with Ars Electronicaā€™s Artistic Director Gerfried Stocker. We had a fascinating conversation on the festivalā€™s theme this year: ā€œWho Owns the Truth?ā€ ā€” stay tuned for more updates after I experience the festival.

Discover what "Truth & Healing" means to these ArtsWave Black and Brown Artists Program grant recipients

ā€œI am no different from your son, daughter, cousin, and uncle. I go through similar experiences, and my my goal is to create a space where my my ability to thrive does not impede your ability to thrive. The two can coexist. Oftentimes, we have a fear that me sacrificing means that I'm no longer able to thrive. And that comes from what I believe is a scarcity mindset. An abundance mindset understands that there is room for all of us to thrive. In fact, when we were able to lift up the least of us, weā€™re able to solve a lot of the issues that we typically would not be able to addressā€

- Daniel Noel, ArtsWave ā€œTruth & Healingā€ Artist

The Episode 19 artistsā€™ projects were shown in the ArtsWave ā€œTruth & Healing Showcaseā€ and Film Festivals. Part 1 of this series features the artists whose work is in the exhibition that is available for visiting at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, OH, through September 10. Part 2 of this series features the filmmakers.

Here are the six artists featured in this episode and their full-length interviews, which are also available in this YouTube playlist and in the episode-specific blog post.

This yearā€™s Black and Brown Artists Program cohort reflects a vibrant collection of diverse art forms created by an equally diverse group of 18 artists. Their mediums include couture fashion, painting, and sculpture ā€” along with film, musical composition, podcasts, theater, dance, and multidisciplinary works.

The projects not only represent the African American experience, but also the experiences of those with Mexican, Lebanese, Somali, Argentinian, Zimbabwean, Guatemalan, and Indigenous heritage.

Your A.I. + Creativity News Roundup

With all of the A.I. news flooding our feeds and screens, weā€™ve got you covered. News to check out includes:

  • Ghostwriter Returns With an A.I. Travis Scott Song, and Industry Allies The New York Times ā€” Earlier this summer, the artist known as Ghostwriter rocked the music industry by releasing a song produced with A.I. to make the artist sound like Drake. Music companies has been scrambling to reckon with the implications of the technology ever since. Now Ghostwriter has released a new song in the same genre of A.I. voice cloning, this time choosing to sound like 21 Savage and Travis Scott. Ghostwriter is also consulting with the Recording Academy and has submitted their debut song for Grammy consideration. The mystery artist is advocating to make the space legitimate, by offering to share royalties for their songs with the artists whose voices theyā€™ve used.

  • Inside Elon Musk's Struggle for the Future of AI Time ā€” Elon Muskā€™s existential anxieties about the A.I. apocalypse take center stage in this excerpt from an upcoming biography of the tech mogul. The SpaceX founder says that's the major reason that he wants to get humans to Mars ā€“ to preserve human consciousness in case Earth becomes uninhabitable. The article also documents the rise and fall of his relationships with OpenAIā€™s Sam Altman and Googleā€™s Larry Page due to their philosophical disagreements over A.I. development. Musk says he is interested in developing an A.I. model at his new company, xAI, that will ā€œā€˜reasonā€ and ā€œthinkā€ and pursue ā€œtruth.ā€

  • US Copyright Office wants to hear what people think about AI and copyright The Verge ā€” Creatives now have the opportunity to influence how copyright is issued and protected in the age of artificial intelligence. The US Copyright Office recently announced that itā€™s accepting public comment through October 18 on three main questions: how A.I. models should use copyrighted data in training; whether AI-generated material can be copyrighted even without a human involved; and how A.I. could impact copyright liability. The public comments may help the agency decide how to grant copyright in the future.

  • Apple Boosts Spending to Develop Conversational AI The Information (Subscribe with 25% off to support us) ā€” Appleā€™s been the dark horse in A.I. since the release of ChatGPT, but new reporting indicates they may be more of a crouching tiger. The iPhone maker is reportedly spending millions of dollars a day on their A.I. framework, known internally as ā€œAjax.ā€ Company insiders claimed to The Information that their model is more powerful than ChatGPT 3.5. No word on if or when this technology will be used to upgrade Siri.

  • ā€œAI took my job, literallyā€ā€”Gizmodo fires Spanish staff amid switch to AI translator Ars Technica ā€” A.I. may not make a very good journalist, but itā€™s still killing journalism jobs. Going forward, Spanish-speaking readers of the online tech news outlet wonā€™t be able to find any content written for them, only Spanish translations of articles originally written in English.

  • Google will soon require disclaimers for AI-generated political ads The Verge ā€” A year before the next presidential election, Google is laying down the rules for political ads produced with artificial intelligence. Campaigns including Ron DeSantisā€™ presidential bid have already used the technology in ads. Going forward, though, disclosures will have to clearly inform viewers that ā€œthis audio was computer generated,ā€ or ā€œthis image does not depict real events.ā€ Inconsequential changes made with A.I. such as lighting or red eye correction will not require a disclosure.

  • ā€˜He Doesnā€™t Need VC in His Lifeā€™: How Midjourneyā€™s Founder Built an AI Winner While Rejecting Venture CapitalThe Information (Subscribe with 25% off to support us) ā€”Amid the financing frenzy in the artificial intelligence space, one of the most successful players in the game is having his cake and eating it too. Midjourney CEO, David Holz, presides over one of the worldā€™s most successful independent A.I. tools, and he did it without a penny of venture capital. Thatā€™s not for investorsā€™ lack of trying, though.
