Tomorrow I head to Reveille Peak Ranch for the Texas Eclipse Festival, and couldn’t be more excited to be part of the all-star lineup. In addition to the music sets, there will be talks on art, space, and tech.

For his pioneering contributions in A.I., natural language processing, and machine learning, De Kai was honored by the Association for Computational Linguistics as one of only seventeen Founding Fellows and by Debrett’s as one of the 100 most influential figures of Hong Kong. The White House issued new rules on how the government can use AI. Here's what they do NPR —  Federal agencies will each need to hire their own Chief A.I. Officer under Biden's new rules for incorporating A.I. into government work. Agencies will also need to fully comply with A.I. safety measures and establish A.I. transparency protocols by December. The U.S. Government is the country’s largest employer, with almost 3 million Americans on staff. 

10% of US workers are in jobs most exposed to artificial intelligence, White House says CNN Business — Service and manufacturing employees have the greatest risk of displacement or replacement by artificial intelligence. And annual economic report finds that complex jobs are more resistant to A.I. automation, but that many jobs include at least one task that would be challenging to automate. The White House is reportedly talking with labor unions about preparing for job displacement. 

Microsoft and OpenAI Plot $100 Billion Stargate AI SupercomputerThe Information — How many moonshots can one person take? Sam Altman reportedly wants to push the limits with rumors circulating that OpenAI and Microsoft want to build a supercomputer at almost 100 times the cost of the largest data centers ever built. The serial entrepreneur famous for bringing A.I. to the masses has also discussed plans for starting an A.I. chip manufacturing startup and his cryptocurrency aims to achieve trustless identity verification via retinal scan. 

An AI model with emotional intelligence? I cried, and Hume's EVI told me it cared ZDNET —  Fresh off of a $50B funding round, an A.I. startup released a demo of what they’re calling the first “empathic” LLM. Last week, Hume AI announced a beta launch of their flagship product, called “empathic vocal interface.” Hume’s officials say that the A.I. is trained like a traditional LLM, but with additional instruction on how sadness and other emotions are vocalized without words. How Adobe’s bet on non-exploitative AI is paying off MIT Technology Review — Adobe puts its money where its mouth is, showing how GenAI developers can build capable A.I. models without infringing copyright. OpenAI and other A.I. companies are currently arguing against copyright lawsuits, claiming that there’s no practical way to build A.I. without using copyrighted material. Adobe, which helped found the Content Authenticity Initiative for protecting digital IP and is not facing any A.I. copyright lawsuits, is showing OpenAI and others that rights holders and A.I. developers can all win. 

Liar’s Dividend Or: How to Manipulate Misinformation Technically Optimistic — In 2016 the Trump presidential campaign’s assertion of “alternative facts” marked the beginning of the post-truth era. The recent saga of Kate Middleton’s unexplained disappearance and subsequent cancer diagnosis may now be a sign that we’re entering an era where humans default to doubt and cynicism when presented with uncertainty. Expect more instances of mass confusion until the internet adopts robust content authenticity protocols. 

Amazon spends $2.75 billion on AI startup Anthropic in its largest venture investment yetCNBC — After rave reviews comparing the newest version of their Claude LLM to ChatGPT, Anthropic receives the largest outside investment in Amazon’s history. Amazon’s investment in Anthropic now stands at $4B total, which gives them a minority stake in Anthropic without control of a board seat.
