Dear Creativity Squared Member,
Today, we’re celebrating the 1-year anniversary of Creativity Squared! 🥳
It’s wild to me that a year has passed in the blink of an eye, and we’re already in Season 2, Episode 47, and celebrating our first anniversary of the show.
From the bottom of my heart: Thank you!
It means the world to me that you’re along for the journey exploring the intersection of A.I. and creativity in this new Imagination Age we’re entering together.
Also, a massive thank you to the 60 guests who’ve been interviewed over the 47 episodes of the show (not including the re-imagined A.I.-created Salvador Dalí!), to the Creativity Squared team, and to PLAY Audio Agency who makes this show possible.
This platform is dedicated to being a proactive voice for a human-centered future where A.I. amplifies the best of human potential, not replace us. To envision a world where artists not only co-exist with A.I., but thrive.
Episode 47 is another time capsule episode, capturing this moment in time of where we’ve been, where we’re at, and where we’re going at Creativity Squared and at the intersection of A.I. and creativity. I hope you enjoy it and all that’s to come!
This past weekend, I had the great privilege of joining Joanna Peña-Bickley’s Future Frequences Salon at her Aurora 21 Design Lab. The gathering was dedicated to women supporting women in A.I. and getting clear on the vision of what possible future we want to co-create together.

Yesterday, I attended the UC/Digital Futures Research & Innovation Week luncheon on A.I. at the Queen City Club here in Cincinnati. There was a great panel with my CincyAI co-host, Kendra Rameriz, and our CincyAI organizing partner and the Digital Futures A.I. Bio Lab Director, Dr. Kelly Cohen. Pete Blackshaw captured the on-stage conversation well on his LinkedIn post — Cincinnati is leading the way with Responsible A.I. and if we’re not on your radar, put us on it!
Stay tuned for more of my takeaways after being on stage with Professor De Kai at the Texas Eclipse Festival, attending the MIT A.I. Summit, and joining Joanna Peña-Bickley’s Future Frequences Salon.

What is GPT2? Mysterious new AI model could be a preview of OpenAI’s next-gen behemoth Tom’s Guide — Could a beta of GPT-4’s successor already be out in the wild? Rumors are flying around social media this week after a mysterious and powerful new LLM model appeared on a popular repository. Reviewers say that gpt2-chatbot performs similarly to GPT-4, or better on some tasks. Sam Altman fueled rumors that his team’s behind the release with a recent post on X saying that he has “a soft spot for gpt2.”
Nvidia-backed startup Synthesia unveils AI avatars that can convey human emotions Synthesia — Deepfakes are about to get a whole lot deeper. Earlier this week, Synthesia unveiled “Expressive” A.I. avatars, which can decipher emotional subtexts and adjust their facial expressions accordingly. The company trained the underlying A.I. model with videos of human actors reading and reacting to scripts. Synthesia says they’re preparing for potential abuse during upcoming elections by limiting avatar creation to enterprise customers and instituting a “know-your-customer” process similar to opening a bank account.
Apple releases OpenELM: small, open source AI models designed to run on-device VentureBeat — Just days after Microsoft released their new mobile-friendly small language model (SLM), Apple dropped the mic by publishing their own class of eight new SLMs. Surprising many, Apple released all OpenELM models as open source, even publishing the weights and training parameters for each.
Critics question tech-heavy lineup of new Homeland Security AI safety board Ars Technica — Multiple executives from the A.I. and defense industries will be advising DHS on handling A.I.-related security threats and adopting A.I. responsibly in the transportation industry. One critic described it as “foxes guarding the hen house.” The 22-member committee, which was mandated by President Biden’s A.I. Executive Order in October, also includes government, academic, and nonprofit representatives.
The Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses have multimodal AI now The Verge — Consumers can finally access limited A.I. features through the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses that came out last fall. Interacting mainly through voice, the A.I. performs best at identifying things in your field of vision such as plants or animals. It doesn’t appear that the glasses can access a dedicated memory, so they’re not a wearable A.I. assistant, at least not yet.
Recruiters Are Going Analog to Fight the AI Application Overload WIRED — A.I. is changing the hiring process from both ends of the equation. Recruiters have more tools than ever to screen candidates and surface quality applicants through sites like LinkedIn. On the flip side, applicants can apply to more jobs in less time with features like LinkedIn’s Easy Apply. Some recruiters say they’re still wary of bias and A.I.’s ability to properly screen candidates, so they’re approaching A.I. adoption deliberately.
SenseTime from China Launched SenseNova 5.0, Challenging GPT-4 Turbo's Performance MarkTechPost — The Chinese A.I. developer SenseTime just released a new foundation model that can optimize response time based on the task. SenseNova 5.0’s “hybrid expert architecture” can process responses through cloud computing or locally on the users’ device, depending on the task's requirements. Looking past the speed boost, SenseNova also outperformed ChatGPT 4 Turbo on several benchmarks including multi-modal processing.
Sanctuary’s new humanoid robot learns faster and costs less TechCrunch — As the robot race heats up, a Canadian startup announces that its updated Phoenix humanoid model can learn new tasks in under 24 hours. Phoenix’s seventh-generation model also performs tasks faster, operates longer between charges, and costs less.
