Creativity Squared: On A.I. and Going Beyond the Binary

“There’s going to be such a volume of content out there. And you kind of think of this similar to what’s happened with social media that the bar gets raised, those things are going to become culturally relevant to the largest swath of people are gonna have to be really excellent. And so I actually think it’s going to make human creativity more important.”

With all of the A.I. updates flooding our feeds and screens, we’ve got you covered with the latest news at the intersection of A.I. and creativity.

Google Has Drastically Slashed Its AI Results After Disastrously Embarrassing Launch Futurism — Google's A.I. Overviews feature has been providing false and harmful answers, leading to Google reducing its usage in search results. The worst examples include Google’s A.I. suggesting a leap off the Golden Gate Bridge to cure depression. Critics note that many of the nonsensical answers trace back to troll comments on forums like Reddit. The A.I. summaries now appear in only 15% of queries, down from 84%. Google hopes to refine the feature and put it back into full service, especially for healthcare-related searches.

Apple integrates ChatGPT into Siri, iOS, and macOS Ars Technica — Apple announced at their annual product showcase that it’s partnered with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT to Siri and other Apple devices, allowing users to ask questions and receive responses from the chatbot. Siri can send questions and photos to ChatGPT for answers and there will be cross-functionality with a handful of apps as well. ChatGPT features will be available on iOS 18, iPad OS 18, and macOS Sequoia later this year.

Elon Musk blasts Apple's OpenAI deal over alleged privacy issues. Does he have a point? LA Times — At Apple's WWDC event, Elon Musk criticized a new Apple-OpenAI partnership, claiming security risks and threatening to ban Apple devices at his companies. Apple defended the partnership, emphasizing privacy protections. Experts offered mixed opinions on Musk's claims, with some questioning his basis. Musk previously sued OpenAI, and his company xAI competes with OpenAI. Some experts agree with Musk's concerns about the partnership's implications.

What is the Cara app, and why are artists deleting Instagram for it? Fast Company — Hundreds of thousands of users are fleeing Meta platfotrms after the revelation that the company quietly started training its A.I. models on user’s uploaded images. Creators are flocking to Cara, a fast-growing new app for creatives to showcase their portfolio and network with one another. Cara bills itself as a safe haven from A.I. data scrapers, offering peace of mind for artists.

Sora Who? Kling Is the New AI Video Generator Everyone Is Talking About Decrypt — OpenAI's Sora AI now has competition from Kuaishou's Kling, a video generation tool that surpasses others in clip length and quality, including the most realistic movement rendering seen so far. Kling is generating excitement in the A.I. community, with demos showing impressive results, even surpassing Sora in some aspects. Kling is available in China with plans for a global release, but registration requires a Chinese phone number.

FTC Chair Lina Khan tells TechCrunch the agency is pursuing the 'mob bosses' in Big Tech Techcrunch — The head of the US trade enforcement agency is putting big tech leaders on notice, shortly after opening an antitrust investigation of Microsoft’s partnership with Inflection AI. Khan says the FTC’s focusing on the big players as a method of deterrence, sending a message to smaller players that federal officials are closely watching this space.

Adobe's Controversial AI Policy Faces Fierce Backlash Marketing AI Institute — Adobe made changes to its terms of service, causing backlash from users worried about their content being used for A.I. training. Despite Adobe clarifying they don't train A.I. on customer content, the lack of transparency caused mistrust. The company has since announced that it will review its terms of service to clarify policies around how it uses consumers’ data.

Helen Toner worries 'not super functional' Congress will flub AI policy TechCrunch — The former OpenAI board member who recently dished on Sam Altman’s alleged misbehavior as CEO is now warning against hasty A.I. policy-making. The WHite House is sponsoring a summit today focusing on A.I. innovations and highlighting the current gridlock for A.I. policy. Toner warns that A.I. policy shouldn’t be decided in the same knee-jerk, reactionary way that seems to be the trend in Congressional legislating lately.

Elon Musk Drops Lawsuit Against OpenAI After It Releases Emails Showing He Was Totally on Board With What He's Now Criticizing Futurism — Elon Musk dropped his lawsuit against OpenAI, which he co-founded but left in 2018. Musk criticized OpenAI for prioritizing profits over developing beneficial artificial general intelligence (AGI). OpenAI revealed emails showing Musk supported a for-profit structure for the company. Musk dropped the suit, possibly due to lack of legal grounds or being preoccupied with his new AI company, xAI. Musk raised $6 billion for xAI, while OpenAI focuses on bigger concerns.
