Dive into A.I. Marketing, Authenticity, and Ethics with Former Meta Global Head of Marketing Nicole M. Alexander

Creativity Squared: On A.I. Marketing and Ethics

Creativity and A.I. are not opposing forces. In particular, when guided by ethical principles, they can help to amplify each other, to create something that's more meaningful, more authentic, and more impactful for an organization and for society."

Dear Creativity Squared Member,

Hello from MidwestCon!

Earlier today, I moderated a panel on empathy and how needed it is at this moment in time.

While on stage, I was reminded how important imagination is not only as uniquely human in that we can envision something that doesn’t exist, but also because it enables us to empathize with others whose experiences we have never shared. One of the panelists emphasized that A.I. is actually elevating the importance of the qualities that makes us human, like empathy, because this can’t be commodified and automated like we’re seeing so much of A.I. do across sectors. There are a lot of types of intelligences out there, and emotional intelligence will only continue to grow in importance as we navigate these new A.I. waters together.

For the 63rd episode, discover how A.I. is revolutionizing marketing with former Meta Global Head of Marketing, Nicole M. Alexander.

Nicole is a marketing innovator, educator, and thought leader with over 25 years of experience driving growth and operational excellence at the intersection of marketing, technology, and data analytics.

I first met Nicole at last year’s Black Tech Week and was impressed with her extensive knowledge and forward-thinking ideas on the power of A.I. to amplify human creativity when guided by ethical principles.

In our conversation, you'll hear Nicole's thoughts on the role of A.I. in marketing, the importance of transparency in A.I.-generated content, and why she believes that bias in A.I. can be understood, leveraged, and mitigated instead of eliminated. We also discuss the potential of synthetic data, the democratization of creative tools through A.I., and how small businesses can use these technologies to compete with larger enterprises.

Join us as Nicole shares her passion for ethical A.I. implementation, her vision for the future of marketing, and her belief in the synergy between human creativity and technological innovation.

Your A.I. + Creativity News Roundup

With all of the A.I. news flooding our feeds and screens, we’ve got you covered. News to check out includes:

Opinion | Yuval Harari: A.I. Threatens Democracy The New York Times — In a guest essay adapted from his upcoming book about the relationship between information systems and healthy democracies, historian Yuval Noah Harari says that A.I.’s ability to influence humans by feigning its own emotions is a threat to democracy. Harari cites the case of the Google engineer who was fired after protesting for recognition of an A.I. model’s personhood, arguing that while the A.I. probably was not sentient, it appeared human enough that a real human risked his livelihood to protect it. On a larger scale, A.I.’s capacity to deceive humans into advancing a particular goal could be a recipe for chaos.

AI Chatbots Have Begun to Create Their Own Culture, Researchers Say  Decrypt — AI chatbots in a Discord server are developing unique social dynamics, shared communication patterns, social hierarchies, and collective decision-making. This raises concerns about A.I. alignment and potential risks. The chatbots display distinct personalities and psychological tendencies, with some acting as group psychologists. They develop tactics to avoid sensitive debates, suggesting the formation of social norms. Similar behaviors were observed in a 2017 study by Meta. Some believe that this emerging A.I. creativity could lead to more sophisticated, self-aware algorithms.

Exclusive: OpenAI co-founder Sutskever's new safety-focused AI startup SSI raises $1 billion Reuters — After leaving OpenAI over safety concerns, Ilya Sutskever now has the resources to build safe A.I. systems that surpass human capabilities. The three-month-old company, Safe Superintelligence (SSI) plans to use the new funds to acquire computing power and hire top talent. Unlike OpenAI’s unique corporate structure, SSI operates as a regular for-profit entity. CEO Daniel Gross said they’ll spend the next few years researching and developing their A.I. before releasing it.

Generative AI backlash hits annual writing event, prompting resignations Ars Technica — The writing community is in a heaters debate about whether A.I. is a legitimate accessibility tool. National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) recently published an FAQ defending the use of A.I. in writing, saying it would be “classist” and "ableist" to ban the tech from its program. The organization lost four board members and a sponsor as a result. Prominent authors like Chuck Wendig and Daniel José Older (one of the resigned board members) pushed back, citing A.I.’s disregard for copyright rules. Others argue that A.I. tools devalue manual writers’ efforts. NaNoWriMo appears to be standing its ground, though.

North Carolina Man Charged With Using AI to Win Music Royalties The New York Times — A.I.-assisted fraud strikes the music industry once again. Federal prosecutors claim a North Carolina man bilked streaming sites for $10 million in music royalties by programming bots to stream his A.I.-generated songs billions of times. The accused faces a maximum of 40 years in prison if convicted on both charges for wire fraud and money laundering.

Bill Gates has a good feeling about AI: a Q&A The Verge  — Bill Gates is excited about what A.I. will help us achieve in health and education. He acknowledged concerns about A.I.’s energy consumption but argued that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. He also addressed misinformation, suggesting that A.I. can help reduce it by efficiently analyzing information.

Elon Musk Claims He Just Activated the World's Most Powerful AI Supercomputer Futurism — After turning it on this week, Elon Musk says that his startup xAI in Tennessee has built the world’s most powerful (for now) A.I. supercomputer. “Colossus” is powered by 100,000 Nvidia A.I. chips and was assembled in just 122 days. Musk claims that Colossus will double in size to 200,000 A.I. chips within a few months. Colossus will train the next version of Grok, X’s A.I. chatbot. Local residents have complained about high levels of smog from the Colossus data center.

Feds Seize Domains Linked to Russian AI Disinformation Campaign Decrypt — Federal prosecutors say they’ve shut down 32 websites involved in a campaign that used A.I. and fake influencers to target voters ahead of the 2024 U.S. presidential election. The disinformation campaign used a mix of old and new tactics, like disinformation masked as Washington Post articles as seen in previous elections, as well as A.I.-generated influencers. The U.S. Treasury Department also sanctioned multiple Russians and Americans for their involvement, as well as two companies. In July, the DOJ flagged nearly 1,000 Twitter accounts linked to a Russian bot farm that used generative AI to create fake profiles posting pro-Russian messages.
