Apple Intelligence Arrives in October: Here's What You Get First PC Magā Apple announced at its āGlowtimeā event this week, the highly-anticipated suite of generative AI features for Apple Devices will roll out to customers starting in October with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.11. New Apple Intelligence features include enhanced Siri capabilities, Writing Tools for text editing, and prioritized notifications. Only owners of an iPhone 15 Pro and newer will get access, due to the high-performance requirements. Features like audio transcription and summarization in Notes and Phone apps, a Clean Up tool for photo editing, and the ability to generate images and emojis on-device are also part of the rollout. Siri will become more natural and integrated, with a new look and the ability to maintain context across requests. Apple plans to process image generation on-device (rather than via the cloud) to enhance privacy.
Taylor Swift cites AI deepfakes in endorsement for Kamala Harris Ars Technica ā Taylor Swift makes her pick for 2024 presidential election candidate, highlighting concerns over AI-generated deepfakes. Swift's endorsement of Harris came after AI-generated images falsely showed her endorsing Donald Trump earlier this year, underscoring her fears about the dangers of AI and misinformation. Swift emphasized the importance of transparency to combat misinformation. Swift has been vocal against nonconsensual deepfake sexual harassment since she was targeted in deepfake images that circulated X. Trump has shared other misleading A.I.-edited images on social media without disclaimers in the past.
Google is using AI to make fake podcasts from your notes The Verge ā A new feature in the NotebookLM app can transform your research notes into AI-generated podcasts. AI hosts to summarize your material, make connections between topics, and engage in lighthearted banter. The AI-generated discussions aim to make learning more engaging. NotebookLM already uses Googleās Gemini AI model to help summarize research. While human-like, the AI hosts still have some quirks, such as spelling out certain words and using unusual phrases.
Google's GenAI facing privacy risk assessment scrutiny in Europe TechCrunch ā Google is under investigation by the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) for potentially violating the EUās data protection laws in training its generative AI models. The DPCwants to know if Google properly evaluated risks to individualsā rights and freedoms. Itās part of a larger European effort to make sure A.I. development complies with the EUās bedrock data protection laws. Google has said itās cooperating with authorities.
Xās AI chatbot spread voter misinformation ā and election officials fought back The Guardian ā After Joe Biden announced he would not seek re-election, Xās native A.I. model Grok incorrectly claimed that a new candidate would be barred from the ballot in 9 states. The Minnesota secretary of state and other officials responded quickly, contacting Grok and X to correct the error. Grok was later updated to direct users to vote.gov. X CEO Elon Musk has described Grok as an āanti-wokeā chatbot with āspicyā answers. Tweets are also part of Grokās training data.
Hasbro CEO Says AI Will Become Core Part of Dungeons & Dragons Futurism ā The toymakier conglomerateās CEO revealed recently that A.I. is already at work in the development of its most iconic game titles like āDungeons & Dragonsā and āMagic: The Gathering.ā CEO Chris Cocks also said that the company plans on developing ābespokeā A.I. models. Cocks highlighted some strategic goals for its A.I. development, including āaround using AI to enable user-generated content, using AI to streamline new player introduction, using AI for emergent storytelling.ā
