šŸš€ Ep65. Dr. Kelly Cohen: Responsible A.I. & Innovation

Understand Explainable A.I. from UC Digital Futuresā€™ Dr. Kelly Cohen

Creativity Squared: On Responsible A.I. and Innovation
ā

ā€œWe can do things we never dreamed of doing, right? We can solve some of the major problems that we face as humankind, but the question is, is the technology mature? Is there too much of hype? And where do you separate the hype from the true potential, and understand the gaps between where we are today and what we can do in the future with A.I?"

Dear Creativity Squared Member,

Hello from Columbus AI Week and from Dr. Kelly Cohen ā€” todayā€™s guest!

Dr. Cohen just reached his 17-year anniversary working at the University of Cincinnati, and we couldnā€™t be more excited to have him here in Cincinnati as heā€™s a national A.I. treasure.

On Tuesday, we had our CincyAI meetup ā€” next month is our ONE-YEAR anniversary! šŸ„³ If youā€™d like to join us on October 8 to partake in the celebration, RSVP here. That night I also spoke on a panel at the Clifton Cultural Arts Center for an audience-led conversation that covered a wide range of A.I. topics. Check out my LinkedIn post with a bunch of video recommendations on A.I. that I shared that evening.

For the 65th episode, join us as we sit down with Dr. Cohen to understand Responsible A.I. and the intersection of A.I., ethics, and human potential.

Dr. Cohen is the Brian H. Rowe Endowed Chair in Aerospace Engineering and Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Cincinnati. With over three decades of experience in Fuzzy Logic systems research, Dr. Cohen has advanced Explainable A.I. from autonomous robotics to personalized medicine.

His work has earned him the presidency of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society and grants from NSF, NIH, USAF, and NASA. He's also co-founded Genexia and serves as Chief Scientific Advisor for BrandRank.ai, bridging academia and industry in the pursuit of ethical, transparent A.I. systems.

In today's conversation, you'll hear Dr. Cohen's insights on the current state of A.I., the importance of Responsible A.I. development, and his vision for a future where A.I. enhances human capabilities without compromising ethics. We discuss his work in testing and verifying A.I. systems, the exciting developments happening at the University of Cincinnati, and why he believes that being responsible with A.I. doesn't mean sacrificing innovation.

Your A.I. + Creativity News Roundup

With all of the A.I. news flooding our feeds and screens, weā€™ve got you covered. News to check out includes:

Generative AI promised creativity; instead, itā€™s about summarization Fast Company ā€” The evolution of generative A.I has seen a shift from creative tasks like writing haikus and sonnets to primarily summarizing existing content. This change reflects a human desire for efficiency, as people increasingly seek to quickly digest large amounts of digital information. Historically, this trend began with bloggers summarizing lengthy articles and has continued with platforms like YouTube and TikTok offering quicker, more digestible content formats. Current trends, such as playback speed controls on podcasts and sped-up versions of songs on Spotify, further cater to the demand for faster content consumption.

EA Shows Off AI System That Lets You Dream Up an Entire Videogame From Scratch Futurism ā€” EA has unveiled a concept video for its ā€œImagination to Creationā€ program, which allows users to create video games without coding. The video showcases users creating a complex maze game with simple prompts, demonstrating instant changes and playability. However, the concept has faced backlash from video game designers and artists who fear job losses and criticize the lack of creativity in the demo. Despite the criticism, some see potential in personalized gaming experiences. The programā€™s impact on the gaming industry and its workforce remains uncertain.

ā€œDead Internet theoryā€ comes to life with new AI-powered social media app Ars Technica ā€” SocialAI, a new A.I-populated social network app created by Michael Sayman, allows users to interact solely with A.I chatbots. The app has sparked criticism, with some describing it as ā€œhellish.ā€ Sayman, a former product lead at major tech companies, designed SocialAI to help people feel heard and supported, especially those who feel isolated. However, the app has faced issues, such as providing inaccurate or potentially dangerous information and offering responses that feel canned and lack emotional depth. Despite these challenges, Sayman hopes the app can offer a space for reflection and support.

AI-generated content doesnā€™t seem to have swayed recent European elections MIT Technology Review ā€” A recent research study from the Alan Turing Institute found that A.I-generated falsehoods and deepfakes had no significant impact on recent elections in the UK, France, and the European Parliament. Despite fears that A.I tools could interfere with elections, the study identified only a few cases of viral A.I-enabled falsehoods, none of which swayed election results. The research suggests that traditional methods of disinformation, such as using bots and influencers, remain more effective. However, there is concern that A.I-generated content could still pose risks by harassing politicians and confusing the public, as people struggle to distinguish between authentic and A.I-generated material.

Content Creators in the Adult Industry Want a Say in AI Rules WIRED ā€” A group of sex industry professionals has issued an open letter to EU regulators, demanding inclusion in A.I regulation discussions. They argue that their perspectives are being overlooked, leading to potential discrimination and overregulation. The group emphasized the need for balanced A.I policies that protect fundamental rights and foster a sex-positive online environment. They highlight the risks of nonconsensual deepfakes and the challenges posed by current A.I and internet safety regulations. The European Commission has been urged to consider these insights to avoid censorship and ensure fair treatment for the adult industry.

California's AI safety bill is under fire. Making it law is the best way to improve it  Los Angeles Times ā€” Californiaā€™s Senate Bill 1047 aims to regulate advanced A.I models by requiring developers to integrate safety measures and allowing the state attorney general to enforce these requirements. Despite opposition from many A.I companies who argue that the bill is too rigid and could stifle innovation, the author argues that Governor Newsom should sign it into law. The billā€™s passage would mark a significant step towards meaningful A.I regulation, encouraging industry collaboration to refine the law and ensuring that A.I development prioritizes public safety over profit.

It's Now Officially Illegal to Use AI to Impersonate a Human Actor in Hollywood Futurism ā€” California has passed two new bills making it illegal to use A.I to replicate an actorā€™s likeness or voice without explicit consent, extending protections to all Californians. These laws, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, build on existing SAG-AFTRA safeguards and also prohibit cloning deceased actors without estate permission. Additionally, Newsom approved laws to combat A.I deepfakes intended to deceive voters.

UN advisory body makes seven recommendations for governing AI Reuters ā€” The United Nationsā€™ artificial-intelligence advisory body released its final report with seven recommendations to address A.I-related risks and governance gaps. These include establishing a panel for impartial A.I knowledge, creating a policy dialogue on A.I governance, and forming an A.I standards exchange. The report also suggests a global A.I capacity development network, a global A.I fund, and a global A.I data framework to ensure transparency and accountability. Additionally, it proposes setting up a small A.I office to support these initiatives. These recommendations will be discussed at a U.N. summit in September.

ā€œYes, we can develop systems that have remarkable capabilities while being explainable, transparent, and ethical. It may take more time, more effort to certify. People who are greedy want quick answers, but there is an alternative, and that alternative doesn't come in the way of our success.ā€
