Creativity Squared: On A.I. & Urgency for Trust in Media
“These things are very easy to use, very powerful for creativity. But the more power you put in creative hands, the more potential damage you put in bad actors' hands. We're about empowering good people, good actors to do the right thing.”
Dear Creativity Squared Member,
I couldn’t be more excited to share today’s episode with you: Ep7. Adobe on A.I. & Trust: Understand the Urgency for Media Transparency & Ethical Generative Artificial Intelligence.
Building trust online and establishing authenticity, transparency, and ethical A.I. is a big task — and it’s one that Andy Parsons, the Senior Director of Adobe’s Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), is tackling head-on.
Today, you’ll learn why there’s an urgency to restore trust online, how Adobe is leading the industry in ethical generative A.I., CAI’s approach to establishing an open industry standard for content authenticity and provenance, the need for media literacy, and some tantalizing teases about Adobe features in the pipeline. For our Leica Camera readers, you’ll also hear about content authenticity from a hardware perspective!
You’ll also want to read Jason Schneider’s What is Art? Exploring Humanity’s Defining Passion blog post where he expands on art as a celebration of human consciousness.
In our community news, I’ll be discussing "Perilous or Promising? What leaders need to know now about generative A.I. & emerging tech." I’ll be joined by Courtney Welton (Allstate Senior Vice President, Law & Regulation; Deputy General Counsel, Allstate Insurance Company; Chief Ethics, Compliance & Privacy Officer; General Counsel, Innovation Law) to share insights about where A.I. is headed and why ignoring it is not an option for executives who want their companies to thrive. Join me at 11am ET on Tuesday, June 20 as I take the virtual Zoom stage for Apochromatik's Focus Executive Forum — sign up for free here.
Also, I got to check out the first A.I. art exhibit titled “Yes, But is it Art?” here in Cincinnati at Studio Kroner, and recommend checking it out while it’s up through June 17.

Listen: Ep7. Adobe on A.I. & Trust
Understand the Urgency for Media Transparency & Ethical Generative A.I. with Andy Parsons from Adobe’s Content Authenticity Initiative
“We're living in an age where even week by week, we see more powerful, photorealistic video and realistic audio fakes used for both creative purposes, but also potentially negative, damaging purposes. And we think on the Content Authenticity Initiative at Adobe, that through standards, technology, and open source, granting people a fundamental right to understand what it is that they're looking at or experiencing is just something that is missing on the internet. Some people say we're restoring trust, I think we're bringing a level of trust.”
In a world flooded with fake content, how can we discern what's real and trustworthy? Enter Andy Parsons who is Senior Director at Adobe's Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), a groundbreaking endeavor that aims to bring transparency and trust to the online landscape. Andy discusses the importance of authenticity in online media and how Adobe leads the industry in ethical, generative A.I. with tools like Firefly. Listen to learn about the importance of provenance in each piece of content, training A.I. systems ethically, and teaching people media literacy.

Exploring Humanity’s Defining Passion
“Conscious acts of selectivity can accomplish essentially the same thing as the sculptor’s chisel or the painter’s brush. ”
Jason Schneider is a longtime friend and writer having first worked together on the Leica Camera Blog. He’s built a long and prosperous career as a photographic journalist. Jason has held numerous prestigious positions, including serving as Editor at Large for Popular Photography & Imaging, the world’s largest circulation magazine devoted to film and digital imaging. He served as Pop Photo’s Editor-in-Chief for over fifteen years. Prior to that, Schneider was the Editorial Director of Modern Photography, where he joined the editorial staff as Assistant Editor in 1969. A self-admitted life-long Leica maniac, he also has several other passions, including motorcycles, poetry, music, and philosophy. In our eyes, Jason is a modern-day Renaissance man.
In this blog post, Jason delves into art as a celebration of human consciousness. He also discusses the elements and aims of the creative process. Then he dives into the limits and boundaries of art and its social dimension against the backdrop of A.I. and if the machines can create art.
