Creativity Squared: On Fighting Mis- & Disinformation at the Point of Capture
ā

ā€œThere's this space between bearing witness and the act of creating. And in that space, we choose how and when to shape time into a defining moment.ā€

-Kiran Karnani, VP of Marketing at Leica Camera North America

Dear Creativity Squared Member,

Drumrollā€¦introducing the Leica M11-P, the worldā€™s first camera with Content Credentials built-in at the point of capture, marking a watershed moment for trust and transparency for photographers and consumers.

Our guest in Episode 28 is Kiran Karnani who is the Vice President of Marketing at Leica Camera North America. Kiran and I met back in 2015 when she started at Leica Camera North America and my social media agency was the agency of record for the global Leica Camera brand. Weā€™re also both active and fellow members of Chief, a network dedicated to supporting senior executive women in their leadership journeys, and I couldnā€™t be more excited to have Kiran on the show today.

In this episodeā€™s conversation, youā€™ll learn about Leicaā€™s recent product announcement of their M11-P which integrates content authentication according to the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) and the C2PA standard. Weā€™ll dive more into Adobeā€™s Content Authenticity Initiative and the coalitionā€™s important mission to help combat the threat of misinformation and help creators get credit for their work. As of this recording, the CAI has over 2,000 members including Leica Camera and Creativity Squared.

Leica is an industry-leading camera manufacturer, and in this episode, youā€™ll also learn more about its pioneering history, how Leica is supporting the Committee to Protect Journalists, the importance of widening our perspectives through the lenses through which we experience the world, and the responsibility for all of us in this pivotal moment to co-create culture.

Also, wow! This has been a BIG week in the world of A.I. with OpenAIā€™s DevDay on Monday. Our news section is dedicated to the key announcements from the day, including the game-changer announcement of GPTs. These are custom versions of ChatGPT designed so anyone can easily build GPTs. This will open up a whole new ecosystem for people to build businesses and what OpenAI calls an ā€œagent-likeā€ future. If you think A.I. news has been an avalanche so far, buckle up!

How well can you spot dis- or misinformation online?

Our bet is: Not as good as you think.

ā€œOverall, young peopleā€™s ability to reason about the information on the internet can be summed up in one word: bleak.ā€

This quote comes from the Stanford History Education Groupā€™s 2016 study on young peopleā€™s civic online reasoning ā€” the ability to judge the credibility of information that floods young peopleā€™s feeds. The same can be said for all ages who spend time online.

In our Creativity Squared featured blog post, weā€™ve got you covered with free and great media literacy resources. Check it out here:

Listen: E28. Leica Camera on Choice, A.I. & Authenticity
Discover the Leica M11-P, the Worldā€™s First Camera with Content Credentials at Point of Capture with Leicaā€™s Kiran Karnani

ā€œI encourage our listeners today to trust, to verify. To have the awareness and agency to choose how they interact with the content that they are consuming.ā€

- Kiran Karnani

Our guest in Episode 28 is Kiran Karnani who is the Vice President of Marketing at Leica Camera North America. Under her leadership, the company launched the Leica Women Foto Project which is a program focused on promoting gender equity in photography. This project provides underrepresented photographers with financial grants, mentorship, equipment, and exhibition opportunities. This year's award celebrates the power of perspective and photo essays inspired by the themes of reclamation, resilience, and rebirth.

In addition to her work with Leica, Kiran has been a guest juror for several notable events, including the ConnectHer Film Festival, Women Street Photographers Virtual Exhibition Call, and AlfaAwards. She has also organized and curated events at the Leica Women Summit, Palm Springs Photo Festival, Photoville, and the Photo Plus Expo.

Kiran eloquently shares so many amazing insights that you wonā€™t want to miss this episode, especially if youā€™re into photography.

Hereā€™s an excerpt from the interview transcript:

ā€œOne single image has the power to incite, to inflame, to spark conversations ā€” to really to change belief systems; to move people to all sorts of actions, in both a positive way and a negative way. And so the integrity of the content that we consume, and the context of how itā€™s being used, is so critical to ensure that we are evolving in a healthy way, in a way that keeps us connected to our own humanity in this digital age. There's absolutely a place for digital content, A.I. manipulation of images. The responsibility to do so in a way that holds our humanity intact feels very critical in this moment.ā€œ

Your A.I. + Creativity News Roundup

If you missed the livestream of OpenAIā€™s keynote at the companyā€™s first DevDay, weā€™ve got you covered. This weekā€™s news section is dedicated to their announcements, which is a game-changer for the next chapter of GenAI.

Key stats announced on stage as itā€™s been a big year for OpenAI:

  • OpenAI has more than 2 million developers building on their API for a wide range of use cases.

  • Over 92% of Fortune 500 are building on OpenAI products.

  • And OpenAI has about 100M weekly active users on ChatGPT (wow!)

OpenAI is introducing GPTs ā€“ custom versions of ChatGPT. Anyone can easily build GPTs to help with specific tasks, at work, or at home. OpenAI thinks GPTs take a first step towards an agent-like future. For third-party developers, OpenAI is showing them how to build these agent-like experiences into their own apps as well. Example GPTs are available today for ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise users to try out including Canva and Zapier AI Actions.

As of Monday, you can create GPTs and share them publicly. Later this month, OpenAI will be launching the GPT Store, featuring creations by verified builders that will eventually enable builders to earn money based on how many people are using your GPT.

  • ChatGPT gets a new UI.

  • GPT-4 Turbo: a new model that includes longer context length, better world knowledge because weā€™re updating the cutoff to April 2023, and other improvements.

  • New Assistants API that makes it easier for developers to build their own GPT-like experiences into their own apps and services.

  • New modalites to the API, including vision, DALLĀ·E 3 and text-to-speech with six preset voices to choose from.

  • Dropping the price of all of our models across the board so itā€™s easier for developers to build and scale on our platform.

See details in OpenAI blog posts, GPTs, and new models/products, for more info.

This will open up a whole new ecosystem for people to build businesses and what OpenAI calls an ā€œagent-likeā€ future. If you think A.I. news has been an avalanche so far, buckle up!
