🚀 Krista Sande-Kerback: IBM & A.I.’s Promise

Why We Need Environmentally Responsible, Ethical, and Explainable A.I. with IBM’s Krista Sande-Kerback

Creativity Squared: On Demistifying A.I.

“Creativity may be the ultimate moonshot for artificial intelligence.”

-Krista Sande-Kerback

Dear Creativity Squared Member,

A.I. is promising the moon and the stars, but how do you actually make sense of all of it?

Krista is Marketing Leader for OpenPages which is IBM’s platform for Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC). She is working on the upcoming major launch of watsonx.governance. Watsonx is IBM’s recently announced generative A.I. platform that comes with a suite of tools for tuning large language models, a data store built on lakehouse architecture, and an A.I. governance toolkit aimed at mitigating risk associated with A.I. and protecting customers' privacy.

Krista and I met back in 2018 in New York City, and I was immediately impressed by her passion for supporting and lifting women up. You’ll hear more about this in our conversation as one of her goals is to demystify generative A.I. for women.

In today’s episode, you’ll discover how A.I. can help close the gender gap in addition to IBM’s history with A.I., environmentally responsible A.I., the need for explainable A.I., IBM’s SkillsBuild program, and IBM’s industry-leading efforts when it comes to A.I. ethics and governance. You’ll also hear what makes GenAI a game-changer and why creativity may be the ultimate moonshot for A.I., plus why businesses of all sizes should be investing in artificial intelligence now.

Why We Need Environmentally Responsible, Ethical, and Explainable A.I. with IBM’s Krista Sande-Kerback

“Historically, it's been a mixed legacy. Fewer than a quarter of organizations have been able to achieve a return on investment for A.I. above the average cost of their capital. I think we're going to see some real changes in those numbers, especially with the explosion of generative A.I.”

- Krista Sande-Kerback

Your A.I. + Creativity News Roundup

With all of the A.I. news flooding our feeds and screens, we’ve got you covered. News to check out includes:

Biden issues sweeping executive order on AI  The Hill — The President’s order, signed on Monday, mandates companies report on their A.I. training, provides resources for displaced workers, and sets standard for use of A.I. in federal hiring, criminal justice and fair housing. The order also sets up a federal grant system for A.I. research, and instructs the Commerce Department to develop guidance for content authenticity and watermarking A.I.-generated content. Vice President Harris will discuss the administration’s vision for A.I. regulation in the U.K. on Tuesday.

2023 Has Been the Year of Generative AI. It's Coming to Phones in 2024 CNET — Tech hardware and chip manufacturer, Qualcomm, announces that their new Snapdragon chip will enable A.I. computing on smartphones. Currently, all mobile device A.I. computing is done through the cloud. However, software companies will have to create the interfaces to actually use A.I. on the phone. Importantly, the Snapdragon chips will automatically watermark all A.I.-generated content produced with the device.

‘Another Body’ Review: A Look at the Brave New World and the Victims of Deepfake Porn Variety — A new film explores the frustrating and terrifying experience of multiple women who discovered that their likeness was used to publish deepfaked pornography without their consent. It’s a problem that experts expect to worsen, yet most state’s criminal statutes do not offer recourse for victims to seek justice. Federal law also protects owners of pornography sites from legal repurcussions.

AI’s Impact on Jobs and Work Is a Choice Between Two Futures SSIR — A pair of MIT economists argues that A.I. should not be used to recklessly automate as many tasks as possible, but rather as a tool to surface critical information and assist human workers in problem solving. To realize their vision of pro-worker A.I., the authors suggest that management should think about human labor as more than just an expense, the tech sector should realign values to prioritize society rather than disruption, and workers need to organize strongly for their interests.

Humans Absorb Bias from AI--And Keep It after They Stop Using the Algorithm Scientific American — A new study suggests that A.I. bias is a two way street – humans can absorb and retain the biases that A.I. introduces to them. Critics did question the design of the study, however the findings corroborate a seemingly obvious concept: non-expert humans tend to defer to the perceived ‘authority’ of an A.I. on topics they’re not confident about. Welcome to the echo chamber!

United Nations creates advisory body to address AI governance Reuters — American leaders from tech and academia are joining their international counterparts on a new advisory body established by the UN Secretary General. Immediate tasks include building a global scientific consensus on risks and challenges, and strengthening international cooperation on A.I. governance. The body is expected to release preliminary recommendations at the end of this year.

Quora’s Poe introduces an AI chatbot creator economyTechCrunch — The question and answer website, Quora, is establishing a cottage industry for chatbots specialized for tutoring, prompt writing, storytelling, roleplay, and other uses. Chatbot creators can benefit from revenue share if they direct users to purchase a subscription for Poe (Quora’s A.I. product). Creators will also be able to charge users a per-message fee. Quora says the ecosystem will lower barriers to small-scale researchers/developers.
