Creativity Squared: Narrative Science & Innovation with GenAI

ā€œA.I. is enabling creatives and those with more humanities related backgrounds to be able to really grow and become good at things like prompt engineering, prompt architecture, and speaking to large language models in a way that infuses their creativity into it.ā€

Dear Creativity Squared Member,

With yesterday being Valentineā€™s Day, I have to say that my heart is full after hearing listenersā€™ feedback on last weekā€™s interview with Cindy Gallop. It sparked lively offline conversations exploring themes in the episode: funding female founders; imagining an internet envisioned through the female lens; human content creation at scale; and how sex and creativity greatly impact one another. And the Instagram Reel I posted has more than 18K views! šŸ™Œ

Following Cindyā€™s message about funding female founders, I couldnā€™t be more excited to share this weekā€™s interview with Katie Trauth Taylor who not only has a PhD in narrative science but is also the Co-founder and CEO of Narratize, an all-female-founded startup based in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Narratize is one of OpenAIā€™s 8 original developer ambassadors and recently secured a $2M seed funding round, earning recognition as one of Cincinnati Innoā€™s 24 startups to watch in 2024. šŸ„³

Katie and I first met as panelists on an all-female panel discussing A.I. at Together Digitalā€™s National Conference last year, and Iā€™ve been a fan of her and Narratize ever since. (Iā€™m a member of Together Digital which is having a BOGO sale right now!) Katie is also part of our CincyAI Meetup I co-host with Kendra Rameriz, which is the largest A.I. meetup in the region. Last but not least, Katie and I are members of Cincinnati Catalyst AI, a consortium focused on improving the lives of EVERYONE in the Cincinnati region. When it comes to Responsible A.I., Cincinnati is leading the way.

In todayā€™s episode, be inspired and fascinated by narrative science and algorithms in the era of GenAI. Youā€™ll also discover how Narratize is uniquely positioned to tackle GenAI and DEIA imperatives. We also discuss the VC landscape, the role of IP and consent regarding data, and the potential of Generative A.I. as a democratizer for creativity and storytelling.

Whatā€™s the story weā€™re going to collectively coauthor together with GenAI?

If you havenā€™t already gotten your ticket to Walk It Off, nowā€™s your chance. Listen to the news from my ethically created A.I. clone, Helen 2.ODD!

With all of the A.I. updates flooding our feeds and screens, weā€™ve got you covered with the latest news at the intersection of A.I. and creativity.

Sam Altman wants up to $7 trillion for AI chips. The natural resources required would be ā€˜mind bogglingā€™ VentureBeat ā€” OpenAIā€™s CEO is planning his next tech moonshot, but climate advocates say those plans will come at a cost. Altman is hoping to break the logjam in the market for advanced GPU chips by flooding the supply side with an investment that would dwarf the worldā€™s third and fourth-largest economies. But more chips require more natural resources, like millions of gallons of water and already-scarce rare earth minerals. Climate advocates call for more transparency from A.I. developers to better track the environmental impacts of training and running A.I. models.

Open-Source AI Is Uniquely Dangerous IEEE Spectrum ā€” A Meta alumni argues that open-source A.I. poses serious risks by giving bad actors access to dangerous information. Open-source models are vulnerable to be misused, as the modelā€™s developer canā€™t control how itā€™s used after release. After Meta released its Llama 2 model, hackers removed all safety guardrails and released ā€œLlama 2 Uncensored.ā€ The author suggests mitigating risk factors by creating liability for developers that fail to prevent ā€œreasonably foreseeable misuseā€ and requiring developers to know their customers before releasing powerful A.I. models.

Wisconsin lawmakers consider regulating AI use in elections and as a way to reduce state workforce ABC News ā€” Wisconsin state lawmakers are voting on two A.I. bills today that would affect elections and public employment. One bill would fine election campaigns $1,000 if they donā€™t disclose use of A.I. in their ads. Another bill would require the state government to research how A.I. can reduce the size of the state workforce.

Only real people can patent inventions ā€” not AI ā€” US government says CNN  ā€” After more than a year of uncertainty in the world of intellectual property, U.S. regulators have guidance for inventors collaborating with GenAI. In order to patent an invention, the US Patent and Trademark Office says a human inventor must have significantly contributed to the invention. ā€œSignificant contributionā€ is not well-defined yet, it will largely depend on the specific case, and will likely be shaped as cases play out in the courts.

Gemini 1.5: Googleā€™s next-gen AI model is almost ready The Verge ā€” Googleā€™s new iteration of their flagship LLM model can fit the entire Game of Thrones series into a single prompt. The one million token context window on Gemini 1.5 is 10x bigger than GPT-4ā€™s. Gemini 1.5 was released to developers and businesses for testing today, ahead of a broader rollout as Google tries to catch up in the A.I. race. The newest Gemini comes out only a few months after its predecessor, but still beat out Gemini 1.0 on 87 percent of benchmark tests.

AI legislation spikes across U.S. states to combat deepfakes Axios ā€” New York and California are leading the country in the number of A.I. laws currently under consideration. But almost all 50 states have introduced A.I. bills, as federal regulators have been slow to address the technology nation-wide.  States introduced more than 200 A.I. bills last month, related to deepfakes, election integrity, and institutional bias.

AI girlfriends will only break your heart, privacy experts warn Business Insider ā€” A new study by the nonprofit Mozilla Foundation finds that most companies and technology in the A.I. girlfriend space are untrustworthy. Citing lackluster privacy protections, harmful A.I. outputs, and toxic content, the report advises customers of such services to interact with caution and to not disclose anything they wouldnā€™t want a friend or colleague to know.
